The first few days after I arrived in Tokyo were the hardest. This isn't an attempt to describe that unease from the outside. I want to write down, as it was, the time I spent right there.
When I came up from the countryside to job hunt in Tokyo, I felt deeply alone. In a city where I had no one to rely on, I spent the hours between interviews by myself. I had to decide where to stay night by night, and where to go next, alone as well. "Just because I was born somewhere else, do I have to feel this uneasy?" I thought, over and over. Even when I wanted someone to listen, there was no one in that city who would.
Around that time I met other students who, like me, had come up from the countryside. We weren't even talking about job hunting. Just sharing the same circumstances made me feel a little at ease before we'd said much at all. Realizing "I wasn't the only one" was, I think, the single most helpful thing in those months. That encounter is what led me to start "Sonomanma-so" in Ebisu, Tokyo — a house where students from outside Tokyo could stay free for their first few days after arriving. Nothing special about the facilities. Just one house with an entryway, a table, and a bath.
Looking at the 27 applications KIBOU has actually received, what drew the most interest was "community — connecting with people." More people are looking for connection than for a place to sleep. What's really hard about job hunting away from home may not be the selection process itself, but the time spent alone in a city where you know no one. I can say that with certainty, because it was true for me.
What KIBOU is trying to do isn't "stay at a stranger's house" — it's "go to a house you already know." Before you arrive, you play that house's quest. Who lives there, roughly when the morning starts, what kind of house it is. Only people who still want to go after learning that apply. Clearing one quest doesn't unlock every space — you get to know a space first, then head to that space. So by the time the door opens, you're already half acquainted. The first few days spent in Tokyo become your first "house where someone you know" is waiting.
What I needed back then, I think now, wasn't words of encouragement — it was a place where, the moment I arrived, someone already knew me. KIBOU is built from the question of whether we can deliver that to people who simply didn't happen to have a friend already there.
What actually happened at Sonomanma-so, I wrote down in the record of that one house in Ebisu.
→ A thousand people came to one house in Ebisu.
How Sonomanma-so began, and where it remains today, I've put together in the archive on the founder page.
