You're already worn out from job hunting, and next up is sleeping in a house you don't know — what time is okay for the bath, is a small gift expected. Try too hard and you're exhausted; too casual and it's awkward. Not knowing the right amount just adds to the pile of things to worry about. Here's a rundown, in order, of what's worth asking ahead of time.
One thing first — none of this is a KIBOU-specific rule. It's the kind of thing that generally comes up when you're staying at someone's home you don't know. The answer changes from host to host, and there's no single right one. But just knowing what's okay to ask cuts down a lot of the day-of fatigue.
The first thing worth flagging is arrival time. Just saying "I'll get there around such-and-such" makes it easier for your host to plan dinner or be home when you arrive. You don't need to promise an exact minute — "somewhere between X and Y" is plenty, and if you're running late, a message at that point is all it takes.
How meals will work is also fine to ask about outright. Together, separately, or should you pick something up on your way? Rather than assuming, "What should we do about dinner?" is enough — your host will tell you. Quietly eating out without saying anything can end up creating more awkwardness, not less.
For the bath, asking about order and timing gives you something solid to hold onto. Some houses will say "go ahead first," others expect you after the family. Timing varies house to house too. This is one where asking early — "when's a good time for the bath?" — beats staying quiet out of politeness. It's easier on everyone.
Whether you can use the washing machine is one of those things you won't know unless you ask. For two nights, three days, packing enough clothes often covers it, but there's no harm in checking anyway. If you also confirm detergent and where to hang things to dry, you won't get stuck on the day.
Somewhere in the mix, you'll inevitably need to answer an email or prep for an interview. Checking the Wi-Fi password and whether there's somewhere to open your laptop is worth doing early. Whether it's fine to use the living room table or better to stay in your room — even just asking that much takes weight off your shoulders.
Whether there's a curfew, and how keys are handled. This touches both your freedom during the stay and the household's sense of security, so it's worth asking upfront without hesitation. "What time should I be back by?" and "Should I hold a key, or is ringing the bell fine?" — asking just those two makes it much easier to plan your evening.
A small gift isn't required. That said, bringing something modest does tend to come across warmly. It doesn't need to be expensive — a small snack from your hometown is often plenty, by most accounts. If your budget and time are already stretched thin from job hunting, you don't have to force it. Saying "just my thanks, this time" gets the point across just fine.
Last is tidying up when you leave. Folding the futon, gathering the towels you used, collecting trash in one spot — it doesn't need to be spotless. "Leave it just a little tidier than when I arrived" is enough of a standard. Paired with a simple "thank you for having me," that's more than enough.
Honestly, everything above is the kind of thing you could just ask your host directly, in the moment. Still, knowing even a little beforehand takes the edge off the day. With KIBOU, there's a quest built for that specific space before you apply — roughly what time the mornings start, what kind of air the house has. You get a small head start on that sense of daily life before you go. With less to feel out from zero, you get to spend more of your time there actually talking to people.
Why a stay runs to two nights, three days — we wrote about that elsewhere.
You don't have to try too hard.
Just ask ahead — and it gets a lot easier.
